World's Largest Underwater Sculpture ~ ATABEY ~ Snorkeling Sosua Beach Coral Reef Dominican Republic

Atabey is 15 feet tall and stands on a 5 foot base, making her the tallest underwater sculpture in the world. - How an underwater sculpture is helping to accelerate coral reef restoration in Sosua, Dominican Republic - A collective of artists, environmental NGO’s, and marine biologists have united to create an underwater sculpture inspired by Atabey, the Universal Mother of the Taino people. The Taino were the indigenous people of the Dominican Republic, the first people to encounter Columbus and Spanish colonialism. Through culture, art, and science, a community-driven movement is being led to improve both the ecology and quality of life for reef-dependent communities such as Sosua, Dominican Republic. The sculpture that was created symbolizes the revival of indigenous wisdom with an aim to restore the biodiversity of the coral reef ecosystem. The Initiative is a collaboration between the Maguá Ecological Foundation, Global Coralition, and the Ministry of the Environment. The project contributors also include Mary Jean Infante and Irka Mateo, in relation to its anthropological aspects, and Hanna Bueno, cultural manager and liaison for the Dominican Ministry of Culture. Submerged in the heart of Sosúa Bay, this sculpture of Atabey, the Arawacan and Taino deity, is a reference point for historical, cultural, touristic, and environmental contributions. One of the largest underwater sculptures in the Caribbean, at 16 feet, this construction is in steel and specialized ph neutral cement. The Atabey deployment will bring together local stakeholders and develop long-term partnerships “We believe that art is something that unites us all,” said Kyle Block, co-founder of Global Coralition, “and has the power to spread an important message. We have to protect our oceans and our coral reefs.”

In November 2009 Jason deCaires Taylor started a monumental project off the coast of Cancún in Mexico. He created and placed hundreds of statues that look like forgotten ancient relics in shallow waters in the Cancún National Marine Park, which had been previously damaged by storms. He has made more than 500 of the life-sized permanent sculptures and they are all made with specialised pH-neutral marine concrete used to promote viral life. The project has been named "The Silent Evolution" and is classed as an underwater museum that is called MUSA. Snorkelers, scuba divers, and tourists in glass-bottom boats can go to visit this strange museum and the installation is intended to eventually cover more than 4,520 square feet, which would make it one of the largest underwater attractions in the world. Jason deCaires Taylor planned for the sculptures to become artificial reefs and some have coral planted on or near them. The statues will become covered with coral over time, due to the natural propagation of corals already present in the vicinity. Each year 750,000 tourists visit the reef at Cancun and this puts stress on the natural reef due to Maurine pollution, warming waters and fishing. By creating these artistic sculptures the marine life will be able to grow and flourish in the shallow waters and the natural reefs can recover.

“There are more stars in our Universe than there are grains of sand on all the beaches on Earth.” There are 100 to 400 billion stars in the Milky Way and more than 100 billion galaxies in the Universe – maybe as many as 500 billion. If you multiply stars by galaxies, at the low end, you get 10 billion billion stars, or 10 sextillion stars in the Universe – a 1 followed by 22 zeros. At the high end, it’s 200 sextillion.
These are mind bogglingly huge numbers. How do they compare to the number of grains of sand on the collective beaches of an entire planet? This type of sand measures about a half millimeter across.
You could put 20 grains of sand packed in side-by-side to make a centimeter. 8000 grains in one cubic centimeter. If you took 10 sextillion grains of sand, put them into a ball, it would have a radius of 10.6 kilometers. And for the high end of our estimate, 200 sextillion, it would be 72 kilometers across. If we had a sphere bigger than the Earth, it would be an easy answer, but no such luck. This might be close.
So, is there that much sand on all the beaches, everywhere, on this planet? You’d need to estimate the average volume of a sandy beach and the average amount of the world’s coastlines which are beaches.
The estimates and calculations made by Dr. Jason Marshall, aka, the Math Dude are that, there about 700 trillion cubic meters of beach of Earth, and that works out to around 5 sextillion grains of sand.

In the U.S. we are all keenly aware of our history of black slavery. Also, there is a general understanding of ancient history, Rome, Greece, etc. However, less is known about the extensive history of Blacks enslaving Blacks, Blacks enslaving Whites, and Muslims enslaving both Blacks and Whites. Some European painters romanticized Harem life with a blasé or laissez faire attitude towards slavery with very little suggestion of the sorrows those young women repressed within themselves for fear of a beating, or worse. Yet, there are instances where you can almost detect a gloominess behind the forced smiles in some of the more detailed portraits. Glimpses of this obfuscated helplessness and despair may be due to the artist's talent or more likely one's own imagination. You make the call. A gilded cage is still a cage. Just as a rose, by any other name, is still a rose.
